As the warmer days of spring approach and the Easter getaway beckons, GEM Motoring Assist is reminding drivers that a few simple checks can make all the difference on the road. A quick inspection of tyres, lights, wipers and essential fluids not only reduces the risk of breakdowns and collisions but also helps vehicles run more efficiently, stretching every drop of fuel or kilowatt-hour of battery charge.
James Luckhurst, GEM’s head of road safety, highlights the importance of taking a little time now to avoid disruptions later. “Fuel costs are at record levels, so keeping a car in good condition will help you get the most from every drop of fuel or kilowatt-hour of battery charge,” he says. Tyre pressures alone can improve fuel economy by around 3%, and adopting smooth driving habits—like gentle acceleration, anticipating traffic, and avoiding harsh braking—can further extend fuel efficiency and electric driving range.
Many of these tasks can be carried out at home with reference to the driver handbook. Checking tyre pressures and tread depth, ensuring all lights and indicators work, topping up oil, coolant, brake and screen-wash levels, and replacing worn wiper blades are straightforward steps that significantly improve safety. For more complex checks, a local garage or mobile technician can quickly provide expert assistance.
Winter months or long periods of inactivity can take a toll on a car, particularly the battery. Vehicles with batteries over five years old, or those left idle for extended periods, should have their battery health checked before heading out on a long journey. A car that’s fit for the road is not only safer and less stressful to drive but also far less likely to leave you stranded, keeping both your wallet and your peace of mind intact.
Spring is the perfect time to prepare for adventures on the road, ensuring every trip is safe, efficient, and worry-free.
