The shape of the modern SUV is changing, and not just in silhouette. As electrification gathers pace, a new kind of vehicle is emerging, one that refuses to trade personality for efficiency. Enter the iCAUR V23, a compact electric SUV that leans into rugged nostalgia while quietly packing the kind of smart, modular thinking today’s drivers increasingly demand.

Set to launch in South Africa next month, the V23 arrives with a clear brief: be useful, be distinctive, and above all, be adaptable. It answers that call with a design that feels almost carved from a simpler era, where function dictated form and every line had a purpose. Its proportions tell that story at a glance. A near-square stance, defined by a height-to-width ratio of 0.96, gives the vehicle a planted, confident presence, while its compact footprint ensures it remains perfectly suited to both urban streets and open gravel roads.

There’s a deliberate honesty to the V23’s design. Flat surfaces and straight lines keep visual clutter at bay, allowing the boxy silhouette to do what it was always meant to do: maximise space and usability. Classic round headlights anchor the front end with a familiar face, while modern lighting elements ensure it doesn’t feel like a relic. Even the exposed wipers feel intentional, a nod to utilitarian roots, balanced by finishes that meet contemporary expectations.

Practicality is not an afterthought here, it’s the backbone. High-strength aluminium side steps make climbing in and out less of a hop and more of a glide. Around the back, the asymmetrical rear design adds character while housing an external storage compartment that echoes the look of old-school spare wheel mounts. It’s a small detail, but one that quietly reinforces the V23’s blend of heritage and innovation. Above it all, a roof rack capable of carrying up to 200 kg opens the door to everything from camping gear to surfboards, turning the SUV into a willing accomplice for weekend escapes.

Where the V23 truly separates itself from the pack is in how it approaches personalisation. Instead of leaving owners to navigate the often messy and sometimes risky world of aftermarket modifications, iCAUR has built flexibility directly into the vehicle. More than 20 factory-integrated mounting points allow for accessories to be added, removed or swapped with minimal fuss and without compromising structural integrity. It’s a system that feels less like tinkering and more like snapping together a well-designed toolkit.

This modular philosophy extends across the vehicle. Owners can equip side ladders, auxiliary lighting or removable fender flares to accommodate more aggressive all-terrain tyres. All-wheel drive variants, paired with 265/45R21 tyres, are engineered to handle a variety of road conditions with confidence, whether that means navigating city traffic in the week or venturing off the beaten path on a Saturday morning. Inside, additional mounting solutions support practical features such as camera systems and device holders, bringing a layer of everyday convenience that feels considered rather than bolted on.

For South African drivers, this kind of flexibility isn’t a luxury, it’s an expectation. Vehicles are asked to wear multiple hats, commuter during the week, explorer on the weekend, and sometimes both in a single day. The V23 leans into that reality, offering a platform that can evolve alongside its owner’s needs without requiring invasive changes or specialist intervention.

By integrating customisation into its very architecture, the iCAUR V23 reframes what it means to make a car your own. It transforms personalisation from a complicated, often expensive exercise into something intuitive and accessible. In doing so, it delivers an electric SUV that doesn’t just keep up with the times, but shapes them, blending rugged charm, modern technology and real-world usability into a package that feels ready for whatever comes next.
