Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is expanding the transmission options available in the Amarok model range with the introduction of an innovative 8-speed automatic. This new transmission system combines a high degree of ride comfort and good off-road abilities with excellent level of fuel consumption. The combined fuel consumption of just 8.3 litres per 100 km and CO2 emissions of 219 g/km set this Amarok derivative apart in the 1-tonne bakkie market.
Sporting a new 8-speed automatic transmission, the Amarok is the first bakkie in its class to have a transmission system of this kind. The 8-speed automatic transmission was specially developed for the Amarok. The development emphasis was on efficiency, smooth gear shifting, weight reduction and reliability. The gearshift speed is at the level of the sportier DSG transmission. The 8-speed automatic transmission uses a torque converter. This allows for better response at low speeds and less resistance to slip than a DSG transmission. These are key factors during off road driving and towing.
The additional gears made it possible to achieve a wider gear ratio spread between the 1st and 8th gears compared to a conventional automatic transmission. As a result, the BiTDI engine works even more frequently in its optimal torque band. Furthermore, the Amarok with the automatic transmission is fuel-efficient. Thanks to the 8th gear that has been configured as a fuel saving overdrive gear that operates at reduced engine speed.
The first gear is configured as a low range gear that can be used for pulling away in off-road use or when towing. The Amarok with automatic transmission has a permanent 4-wheel drive, which makes it highly capable in all-terrain use.
The low engine revs that are generated also have a beneficial effect in terms of lowered engine noise. To isolate the drivetrain as ideally as possible from engine vibrations, enhanced torque converter with optimised vibration dampers is used.
The new automatic transmission is combined with a 132kW 2.0-litre Bi-turbo TDI engine. It has maximum torque of 420 Newton metres that is available at 1 750rpm.The top speed of 179 km/h is reached in 7th gear. It only takes 10.9 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h.
Relaxed driving is also assured when towing a trailer or with a heavy payload. With the automatic gearbox, the Amarok’s towing capacity has been increased to 3.0 metric tonnes (up to 12% gradient).
The permanent 4-wheel drive in the Amarok with automatic transmission offers better ride and greater handling capabilities both on and off road. Its Torsen differential is new to the bakkie class. It distributes the drive power variably between front and rear axle. The basic setting produces a 40:60 split which improves traction on the road.
Amarok – BlueMotion Technology
From April 2013, all Amarok models will be available with BlueMotion Technology. The main features of BlueMotion Technology are stop-start system and regenerative braking. BlueMotion Technology improves fuel consumption and lowers CO2 emissions.
Amarok – Standard Features
The Amarok with automatic transmission is offered with the top of the range equipment line, Highline.
The standard safety and convenient features available with Amarok Double Cab Highline include ESP (Electronic stabilisation control) with brake assist and Hill Start/Hill Descent assist, ABS including off-road ABS, driver and front passenger airbag, daytime running lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, Radio/CD (MP3 capable) with 6 speakers, Climatronic 2-zone air conditioning system, storage drawers under front seats, cruise control and 12-volt socket in centre console, dashboard and load box.
Amarok -Optional Features
Customers can individualise their Amarok Double Cabs by ordering optional functional features such as Communication package which includes multi-function steering, Bluetooth cellphone preparation, Front and Rear Park Distance Control and Vienna leather seats.

Amarok Service & Warranty
The Amarok Double Cab with automatic transmission comes standard with 3 year/100 000 km manufacturer warranty, 5 year/90 000 km Automotion Service Plan and 6 year anti-corrosion warranty. The service interval is at 15 000 km.
